Case of “sensitive” ODI captain, recruiters to discuss case with Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma: report

The BCCI selection committee would seek to sit down with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma before calling on the team’s ODI captain. Kohli is currently the skipper of ODI while Rohit leads the Indian team in T20I.

Split-captaincy isn’t a process that is usually followed in Indian cricket. While Rohit Sharma has taken up the skipper’s role in T20I cricket after Virat Kohli decided to step down, it is even rarer for an international side to have two different skippers leading the two white-ball formats.

Kohli’s decision to quit the leadership role in T20I cricket after the T20 World Cup 2021 paved way for Rohit Sharma to take up the baton. But, the situation has made the job for selectors a complex one as many reportedly want the same person to be leading the team in both ODI and T20I formats.

With the Indian cricket team set to tour South Africa for a 3-match ODI series, along with 3 Tests, in the coming days, the subject of ODI captaincy has been hot, with both fans and experts weighing in with their opinions.

As per a report in the Times of India, the matter the selection committee, led by Chetan Sharma, sees the matter as a sensitive one and is in no rush to take a call. The selectors, reportedly, want to discuss the same with both Kohli and Rohit before taking the final decision.

“The ODI captaincy is a sensitive issue. There is a school of thought that Rohit Sharma should be given charge of all white-ball cricket after being appointed the T20I captain. But for that, the selectors need to sit with Virat Kohli and know where he stands with his batting. The situation will have to be discussed with Rohit too, because he is also seeking clarity on his role,” a source close to the selection panel was quoted as saying by TOI.

When Kohli had stepped down as India’s T20I skipper, he didn’t express any intention of leaving the 50-over format too. With India set to host the 2023 ODI World Cup, Kohli looks to be determined to hold on to the spot till that mega event. Quitting the ODI captaincy after that format, just like the 2021 T20 World Cup, could be a plan.

The selection committee, as it has been learned, will only announce the squad for the Test series at first. The squad, while keeping in mind the captaincy issue, for the ODI series will be announced in due time.
